Bittersweet Nostalgia

We romanticize the past like it was paradise. It wasn't. But I still miss the mixtapes.

Oh back when life had rhythm yeah it felt so free We danced to cassettes and dreamed on MTV No filters no Wi-Fi just living the vibe Yeah the better times man They were worth the ride Right? I Remember those days man what a scene Bright lights glowing everything clean Clubs on fire sugar made high Saturday mornin cartoons no deny Phones had cords calls had weight Say see you later and you actually had to wait Mixtapes for crushes movies for dates Those days hit different yeah those were the greats Oh really? And what 'bout smoke fillin' every room Dinner served no thought for who'd consume? Nerds on eggshells smarts meant a scar Before being different could make you a star Lessons built on fear not wisdom or grace One wrong move and you'd know your place Oh back when life had rhythm yeah it felt so free We danced to cassettes and dreamed on MTV No filters no Wi-Fi just living the vibe Yeah the better times man They were worth the ride Right? Pop stars glowed with glitter and sheen But women's voices silenced behind the scene Talked 'bout style big hair and flare And Forgot 'bout that fear in the ozone air Middle East was burning missiles on standby Borders were shifting while we wondered why Cultural waves hit but not everyone could surf Some got washed out by the weight of their birth And yeah I miss the Walkman its analogue feel But not the afternoons alone with no family meal If dad was home the couch was his throne And mistakes got you lessons that cut to the bone Toys and delight today we recall And forgot the silence the worst of it all Every frame of the past is cropped just right We don't see the darkness; we just see the light Good old days? Maybe but not for all Even golden times came with chains and walls Now we're here so much to lose Global feels similar and we still sing the blues Traded CDs vinyl for a Spotify stream But does the echo of progress match that dream? Today's got its flaws man I'll admit But we ain't scared anymore to call out the bullshit The nostalgia's sweet but let's not ignore That the better times still locked some outside the door So let's raise a glass to the past and what it gave But don't let nostalgia blind the price we paid The world keeps turnin' let's cherish what's new 'Cause today's bad times might be the good ones too
